Socialist Party questions government on Alandroal railway station
The Socialist Party (PS) has formally questioned the Portuguese government regarding the development of railway infrastructure in the Alandroal region. Deputies Luís Dias and Pedro do Carmo submitted inquiries to the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, concerning the Évora–Caia railway link, which is part of the South International Corridor.
The deputies argue that the strategic investment must provide tangible benefits to local populations and the regional economy rather than merely serving as a transit route for trains. They specifically highlighted the importance of the ‘Marble Zone’—comprising the municipalities of Estremoz, Borba, Vila Viçosa, and Alandroal—where the ornamental stone industry relies heavily on exports.
A central point of the inquiry is whether the government intends to establish a passenger station and a freight terminal at ‘Estação Técnica 2’ in Alandroal. The PS seeks clarification on whether existing studies support the adaptation of this site to simultaneously handle passenger services and the loading and unloading of goods to support regional mobility and industrial needs.
