French left-wing primary disrupted by cyberattack

The French social-democratic primary, aimed at selecting a candidate for the 2027 presidential election, was disrupted by a cyberattack on Friday, October 9. The attack, described by organizers as a massive and artificial influx of bot-driven connections, caused significant slowdowns on the e-voting platform.

Despite the disruption, organizers emphasized that the platform remained operational and the integrity of the votes recorded was not compromised. To ensure all approximately 140,000 registered voters could participate without pressure, the first round of voting was extended from Saturday evening to Sunday at 18:00.

Five candidates are competing in the race: Raphaël Glucksmann, Olivier Faure, Ségolène Royal, Jérôme Guedj, and Emmanuel Maurel. Early reports indicated that while only 20,000 people had voted by Friday evening, participation increased significantly by Saturday. The French National Agency for the Security of Information Systems (Anssi) and the Paris prosecutor's office have been engaged to investigate the incident.
