Union Socialiste des Forces Populaires faces leadership crisis after election setback

The Union Socialiste des Forces Populaires (USFP) is facing internal turmoil following its performance in the recent legislative elections. The party secured 26 parliamentary seats, a decline from the 34 seats it held previously. This electoral setback has triggered calls for accountability and demands for the resignation of First Secretary Idriss Lachgar.

Internal factions within the party are reportedly pushing for an extraordinary national congress to establish new leadership. Prominent members have expressed dissatisfaction with the current direction, citing issues such as political ambiguity, organizational failures, and a loss of connection with traditional voter bases. Some leaders, including Mohamed El Arch, have reportedly called for Lachgar to step down.

In response to the results, Idriss Lachgar held a meeting with party leadership to discuss the political landscape and the party's potential role in forming a future government coalition. While the party's future participation in the government remains undecided, discussions are ongoing regarding the conditions and position the USFP would occupy in any potential alliance.
