Ségolène Royal criticizes Raphaël Glucksmann in French primary race

Tensions are rising within the French social-democratic primary as candidates prepare for the first round scheduled for October 9 and 10. Former minister Ségolène Royal has launched a sharp critique of her rival, Raphaël Glucksmann, accusing him of inexperience and a lack of connection to the people. Royal, positioning herself as a ‘Mitterrandist’ candidate, argued that one cannot lead a nation without a proven track record in local or state administration, stating, “you don’t put an intern at the head of a company.”

Glucksmann, representing Place Publique, is seeking to rebuild the social-democratic left as an alternative to both La France Insoumise and the current Macron administration. He recently held a major support meeting in Occitanie, where supporters expressed hope that he could unite the left to defeat far-right candidates in the general election.

The primary field also includes Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, Jérôme Guedj, and Emmanuel Maurel of the Gauche Républicaine et Socialiste. The contest highlights a strategic divide between those seeking to consolidate the left through a broad coalition and those focused on a more specific social-democratic identity.
