Sociedad de Arquitectos del Uruguay promotes architectural heritage
The Sociedad de Arquitectos del Uruguay (SAU) is conducting initiatives to connect younger generations with architectural preservation. Through its Heritage Commission, the organization recently held an educational session at Colegio Corazón de María in Montevideo for sixth-year students.
During the session, architects Juan Montans and Virginia Moreno discussed concepts of heritage and restoration. As part of a final project, students analyzed the Estadio Centenario to propose intervention projects. This follows participation in the Architecture Week (SARQ), which included visits to Art Déco exhibitions and tours of 18 de Julio avenue.
Additionally, as part of the 2026 Architecture Week, the SAU highlighted several prominent Art Déco buildings in Montevideo. The recognition focuses on the historical and social value of structures such as El Mástil, Palacio Tapié, and buildings located at 18 de Julio and Gaboto, emphasizing the lived experiences of their residents and the importance of urban identity.
