Societal denial shields perpetrators of sexual abuse
Following the January 2026 release of millions of case documents by the U.S. Justice Department regarding Jeffrey Epstein, many high-profile figures, including politicians and billionaires, have claimed ignorance of his global sexual exploitation network. This occurs despite Epstein’s 2008 plea agreement involving underage prostitution charges.
Analysis suggests that avoiding accountability for such atrocities requires both perpetrator denial and community denial. Bystanders, including law enforcement, colleagues, and institutions, often claim ignorance to avoid the moral and legal responsibilities that acknowledging such crimes would necessitate. This pattern of active avoidance is compared to the denial seen in human rights atrocities and genocide research.
