Society for Family Health project reaches 1.7 million women in Nigeria

The Society for Family Health (SFH) has concluded its IntegratE 2.0 Project, which provided family planning services to 1.7 million women across 11 states in Nigeria. The initiative utilized community pharmacists and patent and proprietary medicine vendors (PPMVs) trained under Nigeria’s Task-Shifting and Task-Sharing Policy to expand healthcare access.

Beyond family planning, the project provided care to over 1.18 million children under the age of five. This included malaria testing and treatment, which is estimated to have averted approximately 15,000 under-five deaths. The intervention also addressed other critical health issues, treating over 340,000 cases of diarrhoea and more than 137,000 cases of pneumonia.

During the project’s close-out programme in Lagos, stakeholders emphasized the need for sustainability to ensure continued coverage in underserved communities. The project trained 863 community pharmacists and 4,961 PPMVs, with the latter receiving training in long-acting reversible contraceptive services to bridge gaps in healthcare access.
