Socioeconomic status and dental health trends in Germany

A report from the Scientific Services of the German Bundestag highlights the significant link between socioeconomic status and health outcomes. Research indicates that individuals in regions with high socioeconomic deprivation face lower life expectancy, with differences of 4.3 years for women and 7.2 years for men compared to wealthier regions. Furthermore, lower-income groups show higher prevalence rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, depression, and osteoarthritis, alongside higher mortality rates for those under age 65.

In the field of dental health, recent data shows a significant decline in caries among 12-year-olds, with rates dropping from 87 percent to 18 percent. Experts emphasize that dental health is heavily influenced by nutritional behavior, specifically the consumption of free sugars. The World Health Organization recommends limiting free sugar intake to below 10 percent, and ideally below 5 percent, of daily energy intake to prevent demineralization caused by bacterial acid production.
