Sociology professor Marija Vasić returns to classroom in Novi Sad

Sociology professor Marija Vasić has returned to teach at the ‘Jovan Jovanović Zmaj’ gymnasium in Novi Sad, despite months of resistance from the school's director, Radivoje Stojković. Vasić entered her classroom to address students, stating she would teach sociology as she had for the previous 24 generations.

Earlier this year, the Basic Court in Novi Sad issued a temporary measure ordering Vasić’s immediate return to her position pending a disciplinary proceeding. The director had previously suspended her for participating in a warning strike. Due to the school leadership's failure to implement the court's decision, the court recently ordered Stojković to pay a fine of 10,000 dinars and the school to pay 100,000 dinars.

Vasić, who is active in the Union of Anti-Fascists of Vojvodina, commented on her return following recent parliamentary election results, suggesting that political changes have facilitated her ability to reclaim her position.
