Socotra desert rose possesses both medicinal and toxic properties

The Socotra subspecies of the desert rose, Adenium obesum, is a unique plant found exclusively on the rocky island of Socotra, part of Yemen in the Indian Ocean. Often referred to as a ‘bottle tree’ due to its bulbous stem which can reach 2.4 meters in width, the plant has evolved this shape to store vital water reserves in its arid environment.

Between March and April, the plant produces striking pink and white flowers. Beyond its appearance, the plant is scientifically significant due to its milky sap, which contains bioactive compounds known as cardiac glycosides.

These compounds present a dual nature: in precise, minute quantities, they can be used to treat heart failure by increasing the strength of heart contractions and slowing the pulse. However, the plant is also highly toxic. Overexposure can lead to vomiting, blurred vision, dangerous arrhythmias, and death in both humans and animals.
