Socuéllamos platform demands municipal veto over biomethane plants

The STOP Biometano de Socuéllamos platform is demanding that the Government of Castilla-La Mancha grant the Socuéllamos City Council a “definitive and binding veto” over any proposed biomethane macro-plant projects in the municipality.

The organization presented nearly 14,000 signatures and 80 allegations against a draft decree from the regional government. They argue that these facilities threaten public health, water resources, and the local agricultural and viticultural sectors.

Key demands include the immediate dismissal of projects if the municipal plenary votes against them and the prevention of the regional government declaring such projects as “strategic investments” to bypass local authority. The platform also seeks the ability to restrict heavy truck traffic on rural roads to protect infrastructure and agricultural activities, such as the grape harvest.
