Sodium and potassium balance linked to blood pressure management
High sodium consumption is a significant health risk, with approximately 90 percent of Americans exceeding recommended limits. Excessive sodium intake is linked to increased risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Much of this sodium is found in processed foods, restaurant meals, and specific items such as breads, deli meats, pizza, and snacks.
Recent research from the University of Waterloo suggests that the balance between sodium and potassium is a critical factor in managing blood pressure. While reducing salt is standard advice, increasing potassium intake through foods like bananas, broccoli, spinach, and beans may help regulate the body's fluid levels and kidney function. Using mathematical models, researchers found that improving the potassium-to-sodium ratio could play a vital role in controlling hypertension, which affects over a billion people globally.
