Sodium-ion battery technology advances through industry deals and research
The sodium-ion battery sector is seeing significant movement through both industrial agreements and scientific breakthroughs. Industry leaders CATL and HyperStrong have signed a 60 GWh supply agreement spanning three years. This partnership aims to accelerate the industrialization and commercialization of sodium-ion technology, focusing on R&D, product applications, and project deployment. HyperStrong CEO Jianhui Zhang noted that sodium-ion batteries are intended to complement rather than replace lithium-based systems, targeting utility-scale storage, data centers, and “AI + energy” infrastructure.
Simultaneously, researchers at the University of Surrey have developed an experimental battery using a nanostructured hydrated sodium vanadate (NVOH) material. Unlike traditional methods that seek to remove water from battery materials, this approach integrates water molecules into the structure to facilitate sodium-ion movement. This technique has resulted in an experimental battery capable of storing nearly double the charge of reference materials. Additionally, the material shows potential for assisting in salt removal from seawater, offering a dual benefit for energy storage and desalination processes.
