Sodium nitrite linked to rising suicide rates in UK

Researchers have identified a common food preservative, sodium nitrite, as a factor linked to a recent increase in suicide deaths in the United Kingdom, particularly among young people and men. While overall suicide rates in the UK have generally declined since the 1990s, recent data suggests an upward trend driven by intentional sodium nitrite poisoning.

A retrospective analysis of forensic data collected between March 2019 and August 2024 examined 274 samples from 201 suspected cases of intentional or accidental poisoning across the UK, Ireland, and Gibraltar. Of these, 164 cases were medically validated. The study noted a significant rise in cases after 2019.

The average age of those involved was 28, with ages ranging from 14 to 82. Experts are calling for urgent public health measures to reconsider unrestricted access to the substance to prevent further avoidable deaths.
