Sodium‑ion and Semi‑solid Batteries Accelerate EV Innovation
Sodium‑ion batteries are gaining attention as a cheaper, more abundant alternative to lithium‑ion cells. Sodium is plentiful worldwide, which could lower production costs for electric‑vehicle (EV) batteries and reduce dependence on strategic mineral imports. While current sodium‑ion cells still lag lithium in energy density, ongoing research aims to close the gap, and the technology is also being explored for large‑scale renewable‑energy storage.
Semi‑solid batteries blend solid‑state and liquid‑electrolyte designs, offering higher energy density, faster charging and improved thermal safety without requiring a complete overhaul of existing production lines. Industry leaders such as BorgWarner’s battery‑systems director Marcelo Rezende see this as a pragmatic intermediate step before fully solid‑state cells become mainstream. The first semi‑solid batteries are already in series production in China, exemplified by the MG4 Anxin Edition from SAIC, which uses the new chemistry.
Both technologies signal a shift toward diversified battery chemistries that could make EVs more affordable and accelerate the transition to clean energy.
