Sodium‑ion batteries face weight and range limits for e‑bikes

Sodium‑ion batteries are being promoted as a cheaper and more abundant alternative to lithium, offering good thermal stability, long cycle life and better performance at low temperatures. These traits make them attractive for electric‑mobility applications such as motorcycles, scooters and stationary storage.

Nevertheless, commercial sodium‑ion cells store only about 140‑180 Wh/kg, well below the 200‑280 Wh/kg typical of lithium‑ion packs used on e‑bikes. The lower energy density means a sodium pack would add extra kilograms and volume to a 25 kg e‑bike, reducing range and complicating integration into the bike frame. As a result, adoption on e‑bikes is not imminent, while the technology is better suited to larger electric two‑wheelers or delivery‑fleet vehicles where weight is less critical.
