Sofia Asvesta wins judo gold at Mediterranean Games

Sofia Asvesta won the gold medal in the -52kg judo category at the Taranto 26 Mediterranean Games, marking Cyprus's third gold medal at the event.

In a closely contested final lasting 8 minutes and 20 seconds, Asvesta defeated Syria's Soumiya Iraoui. The victory was secured by a single Yuko. This win follows a previous encounter between the two athletes at the Paris Olympic Games, where Asvesta also emerged victorious.

Asvesta's path to the gold included victories over Maria Siderot and Pauline Cuq in the semifinals. Following her win, the Cypriot delegation's medal count reached three gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.
