Sofia Barberi death sparks outrage over passenger's mock videos in Italy

Sofia Barberi, 23, was killed when a Fiat 500 struck the scooter she was riding in Ceriale, Savona province, Italy. A passenger in the car posted videos on social media that mocked the crash and later apologized. He left Italy on a low‑cost flight from Milan’s Malpensa airport, posting another video in which he smiled and said “all of Italy hates us”. The passenger, a Moroccan national, said his family received threats after the backlash. One other young woman in the scooter remains in serious condition. Italian media reported the passenger was not driving and is not under criminal investigation, but the incident has drawn widespread public condemnation.

The controversy highlighted the sensitivity surrounding online behavior after tragedies and raised questions about victim‑support and public accountability in Italy.
