Sofia Barberi's death in Ceriale crash ignites outrage over viral video

Around 1 a.m. on the Via Aurelia near Ceriale in the province of Savona, a scooter carrying 23‑year‑old Sofia Barberi and her friend Emma Brasca collided with a Fiat 500 driven by a newly‑licensed driver. Sofia, the daughter of the municipal councilor for social services, suffered fatal injuries despite emergency care at the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure. Emma remains in critical condition.

A passenger in the Fiat recorded the aftermath, laughing and making remarks such as “we’ve made an accident, this one is dead,” before posting the footage on Instagram and TikTok. The video spread quickly, prompting public outrage and condemnation of the reckless behaviour. The driver, who tested negative for alcohol, has had her licence revoked and faces charges of road manslaughter (omicidio stradale) and serious personal injuries. Carabinieri and the Savona prosecutor are reviewing CCTV and witness statements to reconstruct the crash.

The incident has deeply shaken the Ceriale community, mourning the loss of a young worker known for her involvement in the local CAF and sparking a broader debate about road safety and social‑media conduct.
