Sofia Barbieri dead after violent Ceriale road crash; driver arrested
On the night of 20‑21 June 2026 a collision on the Aurelia road near Ceriale, Savona province, resulted in the death of 22‑year‑old Sofia Barbieri. The accident involved a Fiat 500 driven by a newly‑licensed woman and a motorbike carrying Barbieri and a friend, both of whom were thrown onto the pavement. Barbieri was taken to Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure where she later died; her companion remains in critical condition.
The driver, who obtained her licence three months earlier, tested negative for alcohol and drugs and has had her licence withdrawn. She has been charged with homicide and serious personal injuries. Police seized the car, collected video footage posted online by a by‑stander, and are conducting a detailed investigation coordinated by the Carabinieri and the Savona Public Prosecutor’s Office. The viral video of the crash and the subsequent comments have sparked public debate over the use of social media in documenting accidents.
