Sofia Barbieri's death fuels outrage over passenger's mocking video in Italy

Twenty‑three‑year‑old Sofia Barbieri was killed on 23 April when a newly licensed driver lost control of a Fiat Cinquecento and struck her motorbike near Ceriale, Savona province. The passenger in the car, a young man of Moroccan origin, posted a series of videos on Instagram mocking the fatal incident, including the phrase “this one’s dead, bro”. After the videos went viral, a crowd gathered outside his home in Ceriale, prompting the young man to call the Carabinieri for protection. He later fled Italy on a low‑cost flight, saying he was “leaving because Italy hates me”.

The crash also injured the motorbike’s other rider, Emma Brasca, who underwent a delicate surgery and now faces a possible amputation. Local authorities have opened an investigation, with the prosecutor ordering an autopsy for Sofia and the Carabinieri continuing their inquiries. Municipal officials expressed condolences and called for greater respect, responsibility and road safety.

The incident has sparked nationwide debate over online harassment, victim‑blaming and the handling of road‑traffic fatalities.
