Sofia Coppola revisits Marie Antoinette for 20th anniversary
Director Sofia Coppola is revisiting her 2006 film, Marie Antoinette, to mark its 20th anniversary. A new documentary, Making Marie Antoinette, utilizes approximately 80 hours of previously unseen footage filmed by Eleanor Coppola on the movie's set at the Palace of Versailles.
The documentary explores the craftsmanship behind the film and provides a perspective on Coppola’s experience as a young female director. Eleanor Coppola, who passed away in 2024, is featured through journal excerpts voiced by Diane Lane.
In conjunction with the anniversary, Coppola participated in a Cartier Cinema Club event in Kyoto alongside Pierre Rainero, Cartier’s Director of Image, Style, and Heritage. The discussion focused on the intersection of cinematic language and high jewelry, as well as the film's unique approach to historical memory and personal experience.
