Sofia Coppola to release documentary ‘Making Marie Antoinette’

A new documentary titled ‘Making Marie Antoinette’ will be released to mark the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s film, Marie Antoinette. The documentary utilizes approximately 80 hours of unseen footage captured by acclaimed filmmaker Eleanor Coppola during the original 2005 production at the Palace of Versailles.

Following Eleanor Coppola’s death in 2024, Sofia Coppola reviewed the material to fulfill her mother’s wish to create a feature-length documentary. The film provides an intimate look at the production process, including the work of costume designer Milena Canonero and the challenges faced by Sofia Coppola as a young female director on a large-scale set.

Eleanor Coppola is voiced by Diane Lane, who reads passages from her journals regarding her experiences on set and her relationship with her daughter. MUBI will release a 4K restoration of the original Marie Antoinette film in theaters and on its streaming platform starting 23 October, with ‘Making Marie Antoinette’ becoming available globally on MUBI on 6 November.
