Sofia Goggia begins recovery after dual viral infections
Italian alpine skier Sofia Goggia has begun a recovery process following the diagnosis of two distinct viral infections. The infections were identified after the athlete underwent clinical examinations in Milan at Casa di Cura La Madonnina and IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.
Goggia had been participating in a training camp in Ushuaia, Argentina, since August 23 to prepare for the upcoming World Cup season. Due to severe fatigue and physical debilitation, she and the FISI Medical Commission decided to cut the training camp short and return to Italy. While there was initial speculation regarding a Hantavirus infection, medical officials confirmed that the specific viruses involved have not been publicly disclosed.
The athlete's original schedule included a planned transfer to La Parva, Chile, for speed training, but this has been replaced by a rehabilitation program. Goggia, the reigning super-G World Cup champion, is aiming to regain full physical condition ahead of the season opener in Sölden on October 24.
