Sofia Goggia returns to Italy after falling ill in Argentina

Italian alpine skier Sofia Goggia has cut her training camp in Ushuaia, Argentina, short due to sudden illness. The 33-year-old Olympic bronze medalist and Super-G World Cup winner has returned to Italy to undergo medical examinations.

According to the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) and its medical commission led by Dr. Andrea Panzeri, the decision was made following reports of persistent fatigue and weakness. While no specific diagnosis has been confirmed, medical staff are investigating various possibilities, including a viral infection. Some reports have noted the hypothesis of Hantavirus, given previous outbreaks in the region, though this remains unverified.

Goggia had been training in Argentina since August 23 as part of her preparation for the upcoming World Cup season. Her return to Italy means her planned training sessions in Chile will not proceed as scheduled. Her participation in the season opener in Sölden, Austria, on October 24 remains uncertain pending the results of her clinical tests in Milan and Bergamo.
