Sofia hit by intense storm and hail causing flooding and damage
A brief but intense storm involving heavy rain and hail struck Sofia, causing significant localized disruption. According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, approximately 19 liters of rain fell per square meter in a short period.
Sofia Municipality reported over 110 emergency signals via the 112 system. This included roughly 73 reports of fallen trees and branches, and about 40 reports of partial street flooding. The flooding was primarily attributed to storm drains being temporarily blocked by large amounts of fallen leaf mass. There were also reports of damaged traffic lights and several instances where trees fell on vehicles.
Maria Teneva, Director of Emergency Assistance and Prevention, stated that the situation has since normalized, with most signals processed within an hour to an hour and a half after the event. No casualties have been reported. Meteorologist Georgi Rachev noted that the intensity of the hail was atypical for August.
