A study conducted by the baby product company My 1st Years, in collaboration with linguistics professor Bodo Winter from the University of Birmingham, has identified Sofia (and its variant Sophia) as the most beautiful girl name in the world. The research utilized sound symbolism, analyzing how specific linguistic sounds evoke positive associations.

The name Sofia, which has Greek origins meaning “wisdom,” is highly prevalent in several countries. In Denmark, 7,588 people carry the name, according to Statistics Denmark. In Norway, approximately 6,810 people bear the name Sofia or Sophia, with the name ranking as the eighth most popular for newborn girls in 2025 and the most popular in Oslo.
