Sofia loses Eurovision 2027 hosting bid amid waste management concerns

Sofia has lost the opportunity to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. Critics argue that the decision by Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev to not pursue the hosting rights has deprived the city of significant economic benefits for the hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors.

In addition to the Eurovision controversy, the Sofia Municipality is facing scrutiny over waste management issues. Reports indicate that the Sofia Waste Management Plant (SPTO) has failed to comply with regulations, specifically regarding waste being stored outside the facility's territory and a lack of remote access to video surveillance systems. Previous sanctions against the municipality for these issues totaled approximately 79,000 euros. Concerns have also been raised regarding the lack of a project or clear vision for the third phase of the waste management plant's development.
