Sofia Mayor announces 20km of new bicycle lanes by 2027

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev has announced plans to construct or renew over 20 kilometers of bicycle lanes by the end of 2027, with the municipality seeking to add at least another 10 kilometers. The infrastructure projects include segments along major routes such as Shipchenski Prohod, Rozhen Boulevard, Copenhagen Boulevard, and the Eastern Tangent.

The announcement follows protests by the local cycling community under the slogan “I want to ride a bike in Sofia!”. Protesters gathered to demand better connectivity, the restoration of protective dividers, and safer movement for all road users. They also expressed concerns regarding recent fines and inspections issued to cyclists in city parks.

Mayor Terziev addressed the recent tensions, stating that the municipality's goal is to make parks safer and more pleasant for everyone without restricting normal use by pedestrians or families. He emphasized that the new infrastructure will be integrated into large-scale projects and through changes in traffic organization in designated calm zones.
