Sofia Metro expansion: Tunnel boring machine reaches Sitnyakovo
The tunnel boring machine ‘Vitosha’ has reached the Sitnyakovo metro station, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the six-kilometer extension for Sofia Metro Line 3. Metropolitan EAD and the Sofia Municipality reported that approximately 3,750 meters of the tunnel have been completed, representing nearly 80% of the total length.
Only 900 meters remain until the machine reaches the exit shaft located at the Georgi S. Rakovski Military Academy. The 1,600-ton machine, which features a 9.4-meter diameter cutting head, is expected to be fully dismantled by the end of the year. Since beginning its work on February 6, 2024, the machine has progressed through several key areas, including Trakiya, Arena Sofia, and Slatinа.
The project, funded with 58.4 million euros, aims to connect Oborishte, Slatinа, and Mladost, serving over 70,000 passengers daily and providing a connection to St. Anna Hospital. Mayor Vasil Terziev stated that the six new metro stations are expected to be ready by the end of 2027.
