Sofia Metro Murder: University Professor Beaten to Death

An 83-year-old university professor, Andrei Atanasov, has died following a brutal assault in an elevator at the Giulio Curie metro station in Sofia. Atanasov, a long-time educator at the Faculty of Biology at Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’, was found in a coma with severe head injuries and died in the hospital due to massive blood loss.

Investigations suggest the suspect is a Greek national who had a long-standing personal relationship with the victim. Authorities believe the motive was deeply personal following a deterioration in their relationship. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the attacker ambushing the professor before they entered the elevator, continuing the assault inside. The suspect, who reportedly used a blunt object, fled the country in a rental car and is currently the subject of an international manhunt.

Nikolay Naydenov, Executive Director of ‘Metropolitan’, stated that while the metro itself remains safe, incidents involving surrounding infrastructure reflect broader societal issues. Police are currently reviewing video footage to finalize the investigation.
