Sofia Metro Line 3 expands with three new stations

Three new stations on Line 3 of the Sofia Metro are scheduled to open to passengers on Friday, August 14, after 12:00 PM. The new section, located along Vladimir Vazov Boulevard, connects the Hadzhi Dimitar, Suha Reka, and Levski G neighborhoods to the rest of the city.

The new stations include ‘Georgi Asparuhov Stadium’, ‘Vitinya’, and ‘Gen. Vladimir Vazov’. The latter features a buffer parking lot for 100 vehicles. The expansion includes the deployment of four new metro trains equipped with modern automatic control systems. The Line 3 infrastructure utilizes a GoA3 level automation signaling system, which allows for operator-assisted automated driving with the potential for full automation in the future.

Construction of the 3-kilometer section began in March 2022 and was funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan with 282.3 million BGN. Officials expect the expansion to provide metro access to over 45,000 people daily and anticipate a 25% reduction in car traffic in the area.
