Sofia Moreira de Sousa appointed EU Ambassador to Albania

Sofia Moreira de Sousa, a Portuguese diplomat, has been appointed as the new European Union Ambassador to Albania. She is expected to present her credentials to President Bajram Begaj in Tirana to officially begin her mandate.

Moreira de Sousa succeeds Silvio Gonzato, who has completed his term leading the EU delegation in Albania. The new ambassador brings extensive diplomatic experience, having previously led the European Commission Representation in Portugal since 2021 and served as the Head of the EU Delegation to Cape Verde.

Her career includes significant roles in international relations, including serving as Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in South Africa and working with the EU Delegation to the African Union in Addis Ababa. Additionally, she was part of Javier Solana’s team, focusing on EU relations with Russia and Ukraine, and served as a senior advisor for the EU Special Representative for the Caucasus.
