Sofia North Station to host Northern Bulgaria trains until July 2025
Trains traveling to Northern Bulgaria will depart from Sofia North Station until July 2025 due to ongoing large-scale renovations at Sofia Central Station. Currently, all compositions heading toward Mezdra, Pleven, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Varna, Vidin, and Lom pass through the northern station.
Construction and modernization of the railway tracks and contact network are expected to be fully completed by mid-2028. A temporary software system for computer centralization is planned for early 2027, with the goal of eliminating the need for transfers between the two stations by July 2027. The current modernization project, which began in May 2024, faced delays due to technical obstacles and appeals.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) is modernizing its rolling stock. New Alstom electric multiple units have entered service on routes including Plovdiv, Svilengrad, Asenovgrad, Pernik, and Sofia, while 20 new Skoda electric trains began operations in mid-August.
