Sofia North Station to serve Northern Bulgaria trains until 2027

The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport has announced that trains traveling to Northern Bulgaria will depart from Sofia North Station until July 2027. This change is due to ongoing large-scale renovations at the Central Station in Sofia.

Currently, all train compositions heading toward Mezdra, Pleven, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Varna, Vidin, and Lom are passing through the northern station. Experts expect construction and installation work on the railway and contact network to be fully completed by mid-2028. The introduction of temporary computer centralization software at Sofia Station is planned for early 2027, with the goal of eliminating the need for transfers between the two stations by July 2027.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) is modernizing its rolling stock. New Alstom electric multiple units began regular service on September 1, serving routes between Plovdiv, Svilengrad, Asenovgrad, Pernik, and Sofia, while 20 new Skoda electric trains entered service in mid-August.
