Sofia political debate over monument for engineer Ivan Ivanov

The installation of a monument dedicated to engineer Ivan Ivanov, who served as the mayor of Sofia between 1934 and 1944, remains a subject of political and historical contention in Bulgaria's capital.

While a monument has reportedly been prepared and a location near the Vasil Levski Stadium metro station has been designated since 2011, the project has faced a 15-year delay. Recent developments include a staged photo by the 'Bulgarian History' association intended to highlight the delay, which drew criticism from the 'Save Sofia' party. 'Save Sofia' has accused the Sofia Municipal Council of lacking the decisiveness to support the monument.

Dimitar Vuchev, the GERB regional coordinator in Sofia and head of the Standing Committee on Finance and Budget, expressed full support for the initiative. Vuchev emphasized that Ivanov’s leadership was instrumental in developing Sofia’s essential infrastructure, including water supply and city modernization. He stated that recognizing individuals who built the city should transcend political differences.
