Sofia protests against early release of Milen Tsvetkov killer
A protest is scheduled to take place in Sofia before the Palace of Justice following a court decision to grant early release to Kristian Nikolov. Nikolov was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2023 for the 2020 death of journalist Milen Tsvetkov, which occurred after Nikolov drove under the influence of amphetamines, cocaine, and marijuana at high speed and struck Tsvetkov’s vehicle at a red light.
Judge Viktor Chaushev of the Sofia City Court ruled that Nikolov had served more than half of his sentence, totaling over five years and seven months when including labor days. The court noted Nikolov’s positive conduct, including his work assisting prison administration, participation in vocational training in construction and architecture, and his lack of disciplinary infractions. Nikolov stated in court that he has accepted guilt and is undergoing a process of rehabilitation.
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has announced its intention to appeal the decision. The protest is being organized by Nikolay Popov, who is seeking justice for road safety and accountability in serious traffic crimes.
