Sofia Zoo employees launch indefinite protest over wages
Employees of the Sofia Zoo have initiated an indefinite protest to demand significant salary increases and improved working conditions. In a declaration addressed to Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev and the Sofia Municipal Council, workers are requesting a 50% increase in the wage fund for 2027 and an additional 20% in 2028.
Staff members reported that many currently earn approximately 700 euros, which they argue is close to the national minimum wage despite the high professional responsibility and risky conditions involved in caring for over 240 species of wild animals. They are seeking base salaries of at least 1,030 euros, with highly qualified specialists earning up to 1,300 euros.
The protesters warned that low pay creates a risk of losing qualified specialists, which could jeopardize the zoo’s ability to meet the requirements of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and hinder the institution’s 2025–2035 development plan. While workers stated that animal care would not be interrupted, they are preparing for effective strike actions if their demands are not met.
