SOFOMES strengthen Mexican stock market presence and SME financing

At the 20th ASOFOM National Convention in Cancún, representatives from Mexico’s Multiple Purpose Financial Societies (SOFOMES) and the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) outlined strategies to expand financial inclusion and capital access.

Data from the BMV shows that as of July 2026, SOFOMES secured over 57,000 million pesos in financing, representing 15% of total debt issuances and 32% of short-term market activity. More than 20 SOFOMES are currently listed on the exchange.

ASOFOM aims to align with the Mexican government’s ‘Plan México’ to increase SME financing. Currently, only 22.7% of SMEs in Mexico have access to formal credit; the government seeks to raise this to 30% by 2030. The CNBV highlighted that SOFOMES are vital for reaching underserved sectors, including SMEs and women.

To further diversify funding, ASOFOM is working to attract institutional investors, such as retirement fund managers (Afores). The organization is promoting the structuring of debt packages valued between 5,000 and 10,000 million pesos under the Securities Market Law to attract both national and international capital.
