Soft & Hairy House in Japan inspired by Dalí's surrealist vision
The Soft & Hairy House in Japan, a unique architectural project, is being highlighted through the Unbroken Spaces exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum Dundee in Scotland. The house was designed by the Scottish-Japanese architectural partnership Ushida Findlay Architects, founded by Kathryn Findlay and Eisaku Ushida.
The design was inspired by a 1929 conversation between Salvador Dalí and Le Corbusier, during which Dalí suggested that the future of architecture would be “soft and hairy.” Built in Tokyo in 1994, the residence features a courtyard house design hidden under lush vegetation. The structure includes a distinctive bathroom with small holes designed to interact with sunlight and a rough exterior finish that creates a seamless transition between the interior and the natural landscape.
