SoftBank completes $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI

SoftBank Group has completed its final $10 billion payment to OpenAI, fulfilling a $30 billion follow-on investment commitment announced in February. This final tranche was executed through SoftBank Vision Fund 2.

With this transaction, SoftBank’s total cumulative investment in OpenAI has reached $64.6 billion, representing an ownership stake of approximately 13 percent. The funding was part of a massive capital raise for OpenAI that reportedly saw $122 billion in total commitments at an $852 billion valuation, with major participants including Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank.

Nvidia also reportedly completed the final $10 billion portion of its own $30 billion commitment to the round. SoftBank financed its portion of the investment using foreign currency-denominated senior notes, part of a record-breaking $11.1 billion high-yield corporate bond sale.

While some calculations suggest a mathematical quotient of roughly $497 billion based on SoftBank’s total cost and ownership percentage, this figure represents SoftBank’s blended average cost basis rather than OpenAI’s current market valuation.
