SoftBank plans $50 billion investment in Malaysia AI infrastructure

SoftBank Group Chairman Masayoshi Son has announced plans to invest $50 billion into Malaysia’s technology sector, focusing on artificial intelligence, new technologies, and data centers. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the news following a video conference with Son, noting that the investment is intended to accelerate the billionaire’s global strategy regarding AI infrastructure.

The proposed projects are expected to target specific regions, including Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak, specifically Kuching. This move positions Malaysia as a central hub for AI infrastructure in Southeast Asia, a region increasingly attracting major players like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

Anwar Ibrahim stated that the investment would create high-quality job opportunities, particularly for the younger workforce. The announcement follows a period of significant growth for Malaysia’s data center sector, which recorded 385.7 billion ringgit ($94 billion) in related investments between 2021 and the first half of 2026.
