SoftBank shares plunge 13% amid AI safety concerns and OpenAI IPO delay

SoftBank Group shares tumbled as much as 13% on Monday, September 14, 2026, driven by investor concerns over the pace of artificial intelligence development and the company's heavy exposure to the sector.

The sell-off followed calls for a slowdown in AI advancement from industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and comments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman indicated that OpenAI would not pursue an initial public offering in 2026 due to safety-related concerns, a move that impacts SoftBank's anticipated liquidity from its massive investment in the firm.

To support its ongoing commitment to OpenAI, which includes a planned $65 billion investment for a 13% stake, SoftBank has secured an upsized $11.87 billion two-year loan involving approximately 20 banks. The conglomerate is also exploring further capital raises, including a potential $10 billion to $20 billion bond sale and a $10 billion margin loan.
