SoftBank Group reports 18% profit drop but beats forecasts amid AI bets

SoftBank Group Corp. posted a net profit of 347.3 billion yen (about US$2.2 billion) for the April‑June quarter, an 18% year‑on‑year decline. The result nevertheless topped analysts’ expectations, which had forecast roughly 125.9 billion yen. The profit was buoyed by a 1.3 trillion‑yen gain on its stake in Intel, while the Vision Fund division saw profit fall sharply to 5.43 billion yen from 451.4 billion yen a year earlier.

The group also secured a two‑year, US$10 billion margin loan backed by its OpenAI stake, arranged with a consortium that includes Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Mizuho Securities USA, Apollo Global Funding and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. The loan will be used for general corporate purposes and Vision Fund II‑2 investments. SoftBank said its total planned investment in OpenAI will reach about US$65 billion by October, roughly a 13% ownership share.

In parallel, SoftBank is shifting toward AI‑infrastructure provision, announcing a 10‑gigawatt data‑center campus in Ohio and leveraging its 90% holding in Arm as a technology core. Shares fell about 4% after the earnings release.
