SoftBank plans $11 billion high-yield bond issue for OpenAI investment

SoftBank Group is preparing to issue more than $11 billion in high-yield bonds to fund its expanding investments in OpenAI. The planned offering is expected to be one of the largest junk bond deals in recent history.

The debt structure consists of $10 billion in US dollar-denominated bonds across three maturities and €1 billion in euro-denominated notes across two maturities. The proceeds are intended to support a follow-on investment in the ChatGPT creator, which is expected to close next month.

SoftBank's total financial commitment to OpenAI is approaching $65 billion. This aggressive capital allocation strategy, led by Chairman Masayoshi Son, underscores the conglomerate's heavy bet on artificial intelligence. SoftBank currently holds a BB+ credit rating from S&P Global Ratings, placing it just below investment grade.
