Sofyan Amrabat refuses to play for Morocco under coach Mohamed Ouahbi

Sofyan Amrabat, the Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, has announced he will make himself unavailable for the Moroccan national team as long as Mohamed Ouahbi remains the head coach. The 30-year-old player shared the decision via social media, stating, “I do not feel able to continue representing the national team under the current head coach.”

While Amrabat did not disclose the specific reasons for the rift, reports suggest the decision follows a decline in his playing time. During the 2026 World Cup, Amrabat saw a reduced role, starting only one of Morocco's six matches, as the coaching staff shifted toward younger players like Ayyoub Bouaddi and Neil El Aynaoui.

Amrabat emphasized that this is not a permanent retirement from international football. He noted that he is not closing the door on representing Morocco in the future, provided there is a change in leadership. His absence comes ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in late September.
