Sogama reports 7.6 million euro savings for municipalities via reduced waste canon

Sogama has released its 2025 financial accounts, highlighting that the reduced waste management canon resulted in savings of over 7.6 million euros for the 210 participating municipalities. To qualify for these savings, local entities were required to either reduce waste production by 1% compared to the previous year or increase recycling and composting contributions by 3%.

The Xunta de Galicia, Sogama's majority shareholder, compensated for the lower canon revenue with a 10 million euro contribution. However, Sogama reported significant financial challenges caused by the Spanish State, noting that the unilateral elimination of investment returns for its thermoelectric plant will cost the company approximately 18 million euros annually. Additionally, central government taxes on landfilling and incineration are estimated to cost the public company more than 9 million euros per year.
