Sohei Niikawa rejects generative AI for game storytelling

Sohei Niikawa, the creator of the Disgaea series and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, has stated that he has no interest in using generative artificial intelligence to write his game stories or develop characters. In an interview with Dengeki Online, Niikawa clarified that while he does not view AI as a direct threat to the video game development industry, he intends to keep the core creative process manual to maintain value.

Niikawa described AI as a tool that could potentially improve productivity in minor capacities, such as suggesting character names, titles, or assisting with reference searches. However, he strictly rejected the use of AI for generating plot outlines or identifying commercially viable story concepts. He emphasized that his goal is not mass production, but rather the careful crafting of every character and line of dialogue.

Furthermore, Niikawa drew a firm line against the use of AI for copyright infringement or other illegal purposes. He advised younger developers to focus on building the ability to create concepts that foster emotional resonance with players, suggesting that AI-generated content should only be treated as raw material for critical evaluation rather than a finished product.
