Sohra International Half Marathon draws record 11,672 runners

The fifth edition of the Sohra International Half Marathon in Meghalaya recorded a record turnout of 11,672 runners, including international athletes and participants from 24 Indian states. The event, organized by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, and the Meghalaya Athletics Association, is certified by the Athletics Federation of India and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

In the Elite Men’s 21 km category, Satish Kumar Verma secured first place with a time of 1:03:04. The Elite Women’s 21 km title was won by Tejaswini Narendra Lambkane, who finished in 1:15:20. In the Meghalayan Open 21 km, Wolbetstar Ramsiej and Marqueenless Ramsiej claimed the men’s and women’s titles, respectively.

Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla noted that the marathon has grown from 750 runners to nearly 12,000 over five editions, contributing to the local economy by benefiting transport providers, farmers, and homestay operators. The minister highlighted the event's role in establishing Sohra as a premier sporting destination as the state prepares to host the 39th National Games next year.
