Soil erosion disrupts railway services between Assam and Mizoram

Heavy rainfall has caused significant soil erosion along the Katakhal-Bairabi railway section, affecting approximately 70 metres of track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram. The erosion extends up to 40 metres from the centre of the track, disrupting rail connectivity between Mizoram and other parts of India.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has initiated restoration efforts but noted that repairs may be delayed due to a lack of direct road access to the affected site, which complicates the movement of personnel and machinery.

As a result of the damage, several train services scheduled for September 4 and 5 have been cancelled or partially cancelled. Affected services include the Guwahati-Sairang Express, Silchar-Bairabi Express, Sairang-Kolkata Express, Bairabi-Silchar Express, Silchar-Sairang Express, and Sairang-Silchar Express. Some trains, such as the Sairang-Guwahati and Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Express, have been modified to originate from Hailakandi instead of their original stations.
